China and Hungary, countries at the two ends of the Silk Road, have absorbed the diverse and magical cultures of the Silk Road nations, all the while preserving their ancient traditions. Hungary is the earliest and most friendly European partner of the Silk Road, the “Belt and Road” political initiative. Over the past decade, successful collaborations in bilateral and multilateral relations across various specialist fields have paved our modern Silk Road. During our partnership, forward-looking, constructive projects influencing the relevant international situation have been realized in the economic and political spheres. In the cultural field, numerous outstanding results have been achieved bilaterally, which this initiative could crown as a milestone in international cultural life.
Hungary and China together can stir up and bring new winds to the world’s stages, breathing life into a musical renewal. “Sounds of the Silk Road” is not merely a one-time, long-term project, but also aims to pull back the veil on cultures and bring to each other in the magic of distance, to bring them closer to each other, and to feed off each other and bring renewal to the different layers of musical culture.
Through the cooperation of the two countries, contemporary Chinese and Hungarian musical culture can reach the nations along the Silk Road, and the fresh melodies born from their fusion with local elements can break into the music markets of these Silk Road countries. The project does not only produce a documentary film but also creates an opportunity for the birth of new hits (across a wide spectrum of contemporary music styles, from pop to contemporary works), concert tours, and the development of international projects. Let it revive and expand to the Silk Road countries the China-CEE Cultural Cooperation, initiated by the Chinese Ministry of Culture and Tourism and rich in successes. Hungary was a committed, active, and indeed initiating partner in the China-CEE Cultural Cooperation, this project too could extend the list of internationally recognized and exemplary projects by our countries.
The professional leaders of the joint Hungarian-Chinese project were carefully selected with great attention from both the Hungarian and Chinese sides. The Hungarian side, under the professional leadership of Réka Csóri, Bálint Bársony, Dr. Andrea Szonja Buslig, and Liu Shun, awaits the representatives of the cooperating Chinese partner. The project necessitates giving a voice to researchers of the Silk Road, who will be jointly selected by the parties, all being internationally recognized figures in the field. The first episode to be filmed in China is connected to the Silk Road Expo event in September 2025, where a bilingual song will be performed, merging a traditional local Chinese folk song connectable to a local culture with a Hungarian melody in a fresh, dynamic, and modern style. The song requires local singing, and the participation of a Chinese performer proposed by the Chinese side. Later, the ancient melodies of three additional different Chinese regions will be arranged.
In addition to the audiovisual recording of the musical collaborations, a related documentary film is being shot, which actively involves the Silk Road countries between Hungary and China in the project and expands the joint project with collaborative partnerships.
Along the documentary filming, a Hungarian-Chinese concert series will also be realized, showcasing both completed and in-progress works, with a local performer joining at each venue. Following the completion of all the material, a full-length musical production will also be available, which can be presented at political, economic, and cultural events related to the Silk Road countries as a joint achievement.
The Government of Hungary has already voted in favor of the implementation of the project and places great emphasis on its promotion, which strengthens our friendly, political, economic and cultural relations with our partners in the Silk Road countries. It is important to mention that the Hungarian initiative has already achieved a very prestigious appreciation at the related event of the Turkic Council. Currently, we ask for China’s commitment, both morally and financially, to the full implementation of the project described above.
